Message If you take the formula A=Pi*r^2, you can see the comparison between a single 3" and a dual 2.5".

First, we have the single 3"...
A=3.14*1.5^2
A=7.065 sq. in.

Dual 2.5", we have this...
A=3.14*1.25^2
A=4.906 sq. in.
We must multiply by 2 since we have a dual exhuast in this situation. So in reality,
A=9.813 sq. in.

Of course, we now see why dual 3" isn't needed. A dual 2.5" is quite a bit larger than a single 3". If you want to find out what our 2.5" dual exhaust equates to in a single exhaust, you get this...

A=Pi*r^2
9.813=3.14*r^2
3.125=r^2
r=1.768
Of course, this is just the radius. So we need to multiply by 2 to get the diameter. And so we end up with...

dual 2.5" exhaust = single 3.536" exhaust

That is all...
